DAY 8

We split up for this day, with Nick taking the ferry to Grimsey Island to walk across the Arctic Circle, while Dave
went by himself to hike up the mountain above the town, taking a trail that started in the central park. Jen and I
set out for Aldeyjarfoss, a waterfall located in the middle of a lava field some distance from the Ring Road.

After an hour of blasting down unpaved roads, we discovered the bridge was out, resulting in a some backtracking
followed by promptly getting lost and following a road that dead-ended into some guy's farm. Once we finally found
the area, we found ourselves facing intense winds. Staggering through that, we headed in the direction of what we
thought was a 2.4 km trail. Actually, the 2.4 km was to the trail head, from there the trail went around 0.5 km and
then vanished. Although we were probably close to the waterfall, we headed back, in no small part because Jen needed
to use the restroom desperately.

We reached Akureyri, and headed out to buy beer from the local government-run shop, when we ran into Dave, who had
made it about half-way up and turned back. After that, we headed south a ways and checked out the Grund church and
a Christmas museum, before finally picking up a waterlogged Nick.

Nick had taken the three-hour (one way) ferry ride there, where everyone had gotten sea sick, then been attacked by
wrens while wandering the islands, before heading back to the "town" and getting a puffin-burger. Then, a storm blew
in on the way back, which he weathered outdoors. While he commented about how great it was, the rest of the crew
was somewhat skeptical as to whether that was him or the hypothermia talking.
