DAY 9

Today was our last full day in the Akureyri area and a trip to Lake Mıvatn, one of the major tourist attractions of
the area, a volcanic valley with a central lake. We set out that cool, clear morning and stopped first at Goğafoss,
a set of two impressive falls located right next to the Ring Road.

From there we headed another 50 km or so to the lake itself, stopping first at a series of pseudocraters before
stopping for a brief forest hike on a wooded peninsula, where the ruins of a church destroyed during the previous
eruption was.

After lunch, we headed on a hike across old lava floes that visited two chasms, one of which was still steaming.
We contemplated hiking Dimmuborgir, the blast crater, but didn't have the time. So we visited a lava field instead,
which was full of recent floes, and a valley nearby that was filled with steam vents and mud pots, all reeking
quite heavily of sulphur. From there, we headed back to town, as most of the north part of the valley was a bird sanctuary and closed to foot
traffic.

We arrived around 6:30 pm to find the grocery store had closed, so we went to local italian restaurant, which was
quite good. We ended the day relaxing with some Viking beers we'd purchased earlier at the apartment, while Dave
went out to check out the bar scene.
