Yellowstone Backpacking (August 2021)
Our last day started with a planned visit to the Crow Marina, to partake in some boating in the canyon. That ran afoul
of everyone else's weekend plans pretty quickly, when we called ahead and discovered they had nothing left to rent us.
From our hotel, I drove up to Pompei's Pillar while Richard called around for other options. Ultimately, we booked a whitewater
rafting (well, floating... it was late in the season) for the afternoon, and took in Pompei's Pillar. The monument was small
and well maintained, although I had forgotten my camera, and it had a serious problem with biting flies.
We had a little bit of time, so we stopped by the Pictograph Caverns state park, which was easy to access and small. The pictographs
had suffered quite a bit from weathering, and only a few were really identifiable. We made it out west to the Yellowstone river
for our rafting after a quick lunch, although they didn't start on time in any event. We spent about 2 hours on the river, which
did have some mild rapids, and included a short stop for rock hunting.
After we got back to town, we cleaned up and headed to the disillery (Asylum Distilling) that Richard had seen the previous night,
but which closed to early for us to attend then. It still was only open until 8 pm, but we did have a number of excellent liqours
(and a pretty good vodka, in my case) before getting some dinner an a beer or two in addition at another brewery.
